International Effort Produces New Facility, $12M Annual Sales
Negotiated with the government of Thailand the start-up of a joint venture to build a $25 million manufacturing plant for Zeolite, an important synthetic mineral with a number of commercial applications. The scope of work included in-market research of trends, product and raw materials availability and potential for long-term business development. The project also called for the presentation of a business proposal to the Thai Board of investment in the face of stiff political pressure and face-to-face opposition from a competitor. The proposal received governmental approval and $10 million tax relief. Within two months, construction began and nine months after start-up the plant was at full production capacity with $12 million in annual sales.
Building Skin Care R&D to Drive New Product Innovation
Developed and executed a strategy to build an R&D group that would drive new product innovation in skin care. The strategy was to build a team that could synthesize novel materials based on new insights generated through both biophysical and colloid/interfacial science studies and these in turn could be used to provide robust new product benefit claims in the areas of skin health and skin product technology. After endorsement by senior management, technical leaders were recruited and hired in organic synthesis, colloid/interfacial science and biophysics to execute the strategy. Two new product platforms were established. These are now core products in the skin care line. Existing platforms in sun protection and emollients were strengthened with new product innovation. Over a five–year period ten new products were successfully launched protected by six patents. Over 15 papers, most in peer–reviewed publications provided scientific support for these products.
Create New Process to Supply Unique Actives
A customer needed an alternative supply of five OTC active materials that went in to newly acquired brands. These five actives represented $10M in business. This required the rapid development of new manufacturing processes and capabilities as well as new QA test methods. Over a 12–month period all five actives were approved for use at the customer and are now being used exclusively.
Turnaround Project Re–Establishes Profitable Production
Successfully developed a turn–around plan for a commercial production process that had been faltering for six years. The project included planning, managing and coordinating an on–site, multi–divisional corporate team of engineers, consultants, manufacturing personnel and R&D chemists and technicians.
